Methodology (Created November 20 2025)

The Barbados Homicide Database is an independent project that compiles information on violent deaths in Barbados. The goal is to provide a consistent, transparent record of cases based on publicly available information. This Database does not represent official statistics.

1. Sources of Information

• Reports from established & formal Barbadian media outlets (no anonymous IG, TikTok, FB Pages, et cetera)
• Official updates from the Barbados Police Service (including Facebook and WhatsApp releases)
• Official updates from the Government of Barbados

2. What Counts as a Homicide in This Database

For the purposes of this project, a “homicide” is defined as: Any death that results from the intentional or reckless actions of another person, regardless of legal justification.

This includes

• Murders
• Manslaughter
• Self-defence cases that result in the death of an attacker
• Robberies/assaults where a victim dies
• Violent altercations that lead to death
• Deaths occurring days or weeks after the initial attack (but linked to the incident)

3. What is Not Counted or Included

• Traffic fatalities
• Accidental deaths with no criminal act/intent involved
• Official updates from the Government of BarbadosPolice shootings in the line of duty (unless circumstances remain unclear and are being treated as a homicide by police/media)
• Suicides
• Unverified or rumoured deaths

This means the database tracks violent/criminal incidents, not strictly legal classifications used in court.

4. Date Recorded

The date stored in the database is the date of the attack, not necessarily the date of death. This approach captures the timing of the violent incident itself. If a victim dies days later, the incident remains logged on the date they were attacked.

5. Updates and Revisions

Because information can change as investigations progress or as media reports contain additional information:

• Cases may be updated when new details emerge
• Classifications may shift if official information clarifies circumstances
• Corrections are made whenever new facts become available

The above is subject to available time and resources to make said changes.

6. Transparency

• Source references
• Known details at the time of creating the database entry
• Notes about uncertainty if and when applicable
